As a fan of the Wing Commander games I was eagerly looking forward to this movie. Knowing the way Hollywood always blows it when making movies from computer games I expected to it to be less than spectacular. What I did not expect was this movie to be one of the WORST movies in cinematic history!
Granted, they had a very limited budget to work with, but this is not always a limitation to making a great film ("Star Wars: A New Hope," made for just $9 million!). What happened is that they decided to throw away everything that made the games great and start from scratch. While that might sound like a good idea they made the mistake of making Wing Commnader look like a World War 2 movie!! Huh? The Carriers all looked like submarines (both inside and outside). The fighters looked like the cockpits of WW2 fighters with some stuff put on them to try and make them look like space fighters. Not only did they look bad, they did not even look spaceworthy!
There are many moments in this film that made me actually laugh, though these were not intended as funny scenes. For one thing, when the aformentioned fighters would shoot their main guns, the sound effect was EXACTLY like the sound a plane's cannon would make in a WW2 movie! But the unintentionally FUNNIEST scene was when the main carrier, the Tiger Claw, is hiding from the enemy ship by hiding in a shadowed crater on an asteroid. Everyone is arguing and shouting when the commander tells them all to be quiet, presuambly so the ship passing over won't hear them. Then they hear the rumble of the enemy ships engines as it passes by. HELLO!?! THEY ARE IN SPACE! Sound does not transmit through vacuum! They seemed to have forgotten this little detail. In fact this movie is filled with things that make you go, "Huh?"
There are many other problems with this film. For one thing the actors in this film all seem like they are just going through their lines with the hope they will be done with this garbage so they can move on to their next project. They even managed to get some quality actors, David Warner and Jrgen Prochnow (he was in "Das Boot" so I guess they cast him because this movie was similar [They wish!]), but even they could not salvage the muddled script. The special effects were not too awful, but they were so dark that you can hardly see anything! As for showing the enemy, the Kilrathi, they are onscreen for a total of maybe two minutes. Probably because they looked so phony (oddly enough the ones in the PC game looked better). I'd give details about the so-called plot, but it was so weak that I am not even sure what it was really about.
I could go on and on about this turkey, but I've said enough. There was one redeeming quality about the showing I went to, it was the first time I saw the trailer for "Star Wars: Episode I." Now THAT looks like wonderful movie!
I give this movie 5 turkeys!
