OFFICIAL IMDb "TOP 50 RATED FILMS BY DECADES" LISTS -- In addition to maintaining a Top 250 list, IMDb used to also maintain official (& fluid) "Top 50 Rated Films by Decade" lists for each decade beginning with the 1910's (the decade during which the first qualifying movies currently exist). The exact criteria and algorithms used to create these lists is not known but was probably similar to the methodologies used to establish the IMDb Top 250 list. Similar to the IMDb Top 250, films included in the decades lists were confined to theatrically released feature length narrative films (i.e. no documentaries, shorts, TV Movies, etc.). One definite difference from the IMDb Top 250 was that the minimum vote threshold for inclusion in the earlier decades was significantly lower than that required for the IMDb Top 250 (and more recent decades lists) because less than 50 films would have qualified otherwise.
DISCONTINUATION OF DECADES LISTS -- These "official" decades lists were discontinued by IMDb in September 2012. The reason, according to an IMDb official rep:
"When [IMDb] introduced Advanced Search, a lot of these charts became obsolete or didn't work anymore and were removed. You can generate the same lists, and add a lot more refinements/criteria, via the search: http://www.imdb.com/search/title ... By playing with the genre and release date fields, you can construct all kinds of 'Top 50' charts."
TITLES ON THE MARGIN -- Because these lists were fluid, a small handful of titles generally hovering around the 50 spot would cycle in and out of the list. To track these, I maintained (and frequently updated) a spreadsheet of all the decades lists beginning in 2008 and continuing until August 4, 2011 (which was when I last checked and documented the lists). Each time I checked the lists, I noted the 50 titles in the current lists, what titles had fallen out since the last time I checked, and which films entered the top 50 since the last time I checked. These "extra" titles are included in the "Titles On The Margin" category. Although I don't claim to have recorded every one of these extra titles over these final years IMDb maintained the lists, I do believe they are pretty comprehensive. It is noted that there are only a few extra titles for each decade except for the 1910's, and to a smaller degree the 1920's, because there were greater fluctuations in those lists due to the lower number of votes for these titles (meaning just a few new ratings votes could drastically change a film's average rating and placement within the list). Although these extra titles are numbered from #51 up, they are not in any particular order. Therefore, ALL should technically be considered as tied at #51.
BOGUS TITLE -- I am not including the 8-hour long Jehovah's Witnesses religious documentary from 1914 titled "The Photo-Drama of Creation". In my opinion, the title should never have been included since it was (1) not so much a movie but rather a religious documentary outlining the sects religious beliefs via synchronised sound, moving film, and colour slides, and (2) not INTENDED as a fictional narrative film, but rather a documentary depicting their beliefs.
SUMMARY --- The lists included herein represent a snapshot taken on August 4, 2011 of IMDb's official "Top 50 Rated Films by Decade" for each decade from the 1910's through the 2000's, with extra titles as included in the "Titles On The Margin" categories representing those films which are known to have cycled in and out of the Top 50 lists before &/or after the August 4, 2011 snapshot. Becase the lists were abandoned in 2012, I am not including the incomplete 2010's decade for obvious reasons.
