University students mostly join at 18 and go for 3 or 4 years to get a degree. And it usually involves leaving the parental home. Which I have done. And, if anyone is doing the same, or thinking of it, I can highly recommend it. It's really not as scary as I was expecting. Maybe the emotional aspect of leaving my friends and family behind hasn't struck me yet.
Funny...I never experienced any real major problems with homesickness until I went back for my sophomore year at college.
It probably had something to do with the fact that I went back a week early that year, before the majority of the students began coming back.
It may have also had something to do with the fact that I had a wonderful room situation my freshman year. I couldn't have asked for better roommates. One of my roommates that year I am still great friends with; he was one of the groomsmen in my wedding, and I was an usher in his.
My sophomore year, by comparison, was the worst room situation I had in any of my four years at college. One of my roommates was a really not-so-nice fellow who treated most people around him (including his girlfriend) like dirt.
I guess I got spoiled my freshman year. Junior and senior years weren't too bad, but they didn't compare. I hope you find yourself in a good room situation this year.
