When I was teaching, I used to get a lot of crank calls. That was before the days of Caller ID and such. Usually they were in the middle of the night, brief and profane. One night I got a really bad one that I won't quote, and I just said, "We have a tracer on this line and you're going to jail." It was a lie, but I never heard that voice again.

Back when we still had two beautiful teen-age daughters living at home (What can I say - they're *my* daughters!) they used to get lots of calls from unidentified love-sick boys. One guy got really annoying, so one night while he was on the line with the older daughter, I came up and whispered loudly, "Is the tape recorder on?" She heard a click and that was the last of him.
