Adventure Quest 1 - Can't open the drawbridge

I have no idea what item I'm missing - although I know I'm missing something. I have four passwords at this point. I've given the fish to the gnome, I've ridden the boat. I've revisited every location in the game, it feels like, and tried every option at least three times each.
The ONLY thing I can't figure out is how to get that lump out from underneath the couch in that one fortress - and I can't seem to figure out how I got there in the first place, because I can't seem to get back.
As additional information, I'm picking this game up after I spent a few months away from it, so I'm having difficulty remembering everything that I may have did.
